U15, Prep Hockey Teams Win League Titles

Three Spartans hockey teams have won their league championships over the last month. The latest was the U15 squad, capturing the RSEQ Metropolitaine D2 title on Sunday with a 2-1 win over Heritage High School.

The championship game on home ice saw the scoring open in the second period with a goal by Sena Shirakabe, with assists by William Little and Félix Pollender. Holden Smits got the game-winner in the third, assisted by Zackary Vachon. Heritage scored one in the third.

The Spartans made it into the final after beating Howard S. Billings 7-4 in the semi. Opening games saw Stanstead go 4-3 against Kuper Academie, 3-2 versus Ulysse and 9-2 against Collège Notre-Dame.
The U15s will now advance to the provincial tournament in Quebec City April 24-27.

The Pat Burns Arena also hosted the U18 league finals over the weekend. In this case, the home team lost their two opening games 2-1, both in overtime, against Selwyn House and Loyola.

Last month, both prep hockey teams captured their respective league titles. At the Junior Women’s Hockey League U16 championships in Canton, MA, the prep girls beat NAHA 2-0 in the championship final, having opened the tournament with a 4-0 win against the same team, followed by a 3-2 OT win vs Philadelphia and a 5-1 victory against Washington. This is the second JWHL win in two years for the prep girls team.

The prep boys, meanwhile, won the championship in their first season in the Canadian Sports Schools Hockey League. The Spartans opened their tournament with wins over Fort Erie Academy (4-1) and Selwyn House (5-1), followed by a quarter-final 4-1 victory over Okanagan Hockey Academy. The semi was against local rivals BCS, a 2-1 win for Stanstead, followed by a 3-1 win against Selwyn House.

At the varsity level, the varsity girls were finalists in their JWHL tournament last month but lost to NAHA 1-3 in the championship game. At the CPSHA finals, the varsity boys hoped to repeat last year’s championship win but fell to BCS 1-6 in the semi-final.
