Doing Small Things in a Great Way

By Josh L., Grade 11
I find myself often looking at the world, and I see its many challenges – poverty, injustice, inequality – and I wonder, what can I do? I look at the great figures of history: revolutionaries, leaders, visionaries, people who have made real, substantial change, and I think to myself, I am just one person. How can I make a difference like they did?

But in a recent unit we did in AP Language, I came across a quote by Martin Luther King Jr. He said, “If I cannot do great things, I can do small things in a great way.”

This reminded me that not all of us will stand before crowds of thousands. Not all of us will write history books or change the course of nations. But every single one of us has the power to change lives, one moment, one action, one choice at a time.

Think of your teachers who believe in you even if you are struggling. The Health Centre staff who comfort and offer you help when you are sick. Maintenance who do their job with pride and integrity no matter how unseen or how awful the weather is. These acts may seem small but they are done with love, with excellence, with purpose. And that makes them great.

So I challenge you today: do not wait for the perfect moment, the grand opportunity, the stage of history. Find your greatness in the everyday. Pour your heart into whatever you do. Because when we commit ourselves to doing small things in a great way, we create a world that is kinder, stronger and more just, one act at a time.
