SB Basketball: Spartans Respond Well to Adversity

By Erik Van Dyke
Things did not exactly line up or go well for your Spartans in last Tuesday’s home tilt vs Triolet.
  • We were a little tired, coming off the Fri/Sat/Sun Anderson-Bailly weekend with only one day’s rest.
  • Starting guard Josh was out sick.
  • Starting centre Augie went down with a turned ankle in the third quarter.
  • And starting point guard Patito, after early foul trouble, got ejected for unsportsmanlike conduct at the start of the fourth, shoving an opposing player after that player (who also got ejected) went after one of Patito’s teammates.
But I like how we responded to every one of these situations.
  • We came out with good defensive energy to start the game, highlighted by Augie’s 2-handed take-your-lunch block and steal on the very first possession.
  • Daniel and Jeremy filled in ably for Josh at the three.
  • When Augie went down, Bo and Jeremiah and Victor stepped up on defence.
  • And when Patito went out, Daniel filled in nicely, bringing the ball up against pressure.

In fact, there was a lot to like in this crucial 51-31 RSEQ league win. We ran the floor well, creating early opportunities on offence before Trio could set their press or their half-court defence. Luke played excellent defence on the wing, highlighted by the charge he took in the third quarter – those kinds of plays always energize your team. Bo was tough inside, ran the floor hard, and was 6 for 6(!) from the free throw line. Jeremiah didn’t foul out! We were smarter and more patient in the halfcourt, with fewer turnovers. And we finished the game strong, sealing the win with an intense, smart fourth quarter despite being down three(!) starters. I tell ya, I love love LOVE the depth on this team.

But what we’ll all probably remember from this one was Player Of The Game Victor lighting it up on offence, doing his best Kevin Durant impersonation, hitting jumpers like it was the easiest game in the world. At one point, Victor was feeling it so well that he took a pass just inside the 3-point line and without hesitation just heat-check launched it, with his coaches going, “No no no!” and then, “Yes!” as it hit nothing but bottom, again. The 8-year-old-at-Christmas smile on his face as he jogged back on defence was pure joy, and from that point on we knew this game was ours.

Nice win, boys. Since we’ve returned from Christmas, we’ve improved from 1-2 in the league to 4-2. They were all must-wins if we want to make the playoffs, and you got it done each time. Let’s keep the momentum rolling.
