Hockey Week Recap - December 1-5

  

 

The boys had three games over the past week across the U.S. border. They faced off against Tilton School in New Hampshire on Wednesday and two Massachusetts schools over the weekend: Cushing Academy and Dexter Southfield School.

 

Ben Forget started in goal on Wednesday night’s game against Tilton School. Nathan Garnier and Zac Soifer were both able to record goals. However, the Spartans were unable to come out with a win. In the 4-2 loss, Forget faced 33 shots.

 

Wills Seagrave and Ben Forget shared the net in Saturday night’s game versus Cushing Academy. They faced a total of 30 shots, whereas the Spartans had 33 shots on net. Jeremy Leroux and Chaka Muntu both had a pair of goals. Also credited with a goal was Aksel Jalojarvi. Unfortunately, the boys lost 5-6 to Cushing in overtime.

 

The Spartans were outshot 37-21 against Dexter in the final game of the weekend. Three players were able to find the back of the net: Leroux, Garnier, and Moritz Lackner. After three periods of play the boys could not rally for the win and lost 3-6.

Traveling to Kitchener, Ontario, the varsity girls competed in the Canada/USA Cup. The tournament was comprised of high-level teams that proved to be the best hockey the girls have faced all year.

 

The first game was against Cambridge Jrs. This was the first loss the varsity girls have recorded this season. This back-and-forth game came down to the final minutes. Cambridge Jrs were able to seal the deal with a late goal in the third period. Mégane Pilon had 23 saves in the 2-3 loss.

 

Over the next three games, the girls were able to outscore opponents 9-4. Throughout two games, Arianne Leblanc made 52 saves. Pilon made 14 saves in the game against the Ottawa 67’s. They dominated to come out with three wins: 2-1 versus London Jrs, 3-1 versus Ottawa 67’s and 4-2 against Kingston.

 

The final game of the weekend was against Kitchener. This marked the first game in approximately 4 years that the varsity girls were unable to score a goal. Kitchener outshot the Spartans but were unsuccessful. The game ended in a 0-0 tie.

 

The varsity girls finished the tournament in 4^th position out of 14 teams in the U22AA Black division.

The weekend started on Thursday, December 2, for the prep boys as they traveled to the Quebec City Challenge Tournament.

 

They opened their first game against Séminaire Saint-Joseph. After a scoreless first period, captain Dominic Pokora found the back of the net for a power play goal. Unfortunately, Seminaire answered with a quick goal to tie the game. The Spartans lost in a shootout 1-2.

 

The first game for the boys on Friday was against Polyvalente de l’Ancienne-Lorette. Antoine Rémillard scored the opening goal just 5 minutes into the first period with the help from Zackary Maheu and Ben Leclerc. This opened the gates for the team, as 6 other Spartans were able to record a goal. The boys won 7-0.

 

The second puck drop was against Lower Canada College. Scoring the first goal of the game, Eli Antoine needed no help. Shortly after, Ryan Johnson followed up for his first goal of the game. Johnson completed his hat trick in the second period. The boys ended Friday with a 4-1 against LCC.

 

Saturday started strong, as the boys faced École secondaire du Verbe-Divin and scored three unanswered goals in the first period. Presley Langevin sealed the deal by scoring 39 seconds into the second period. The opposing team would net one in later in the second. The game ended 4-1 with the Spartans on top.

 

They found themselves in the quarter-finals on Saturday night against École secondiare Lucille-Teasdale. In the first shift of the game, Félix Fortier snuck one past the goalie. Three minutes later Iain Olsen was able to find the back of the net. After three periods of play, the boys won 4-1 and secured a spot in the semi-finals.

The Spartans’ semi-final was played against École secondaire Paul-Hubert. The opposing team was able to get ahead by two goals in the first half of the game. Juho Virtanen scored to shorten Paul-Huberts' lead, but the Spartans were unsuccessful in making a comeback, losing 1-2.

The prep girls defended home ice for a pair of games against College Universel.

 

Annie LaMantia started in net for the prep girls, earning her first career win as a Spartan. Another first came to Alexa Gagné, as she scored her very first goal as a Spartan. The team rallied hard after having a 6-game losing streak and earned their first win at the Pat Burns Arena with a 6-2 score.

 

Sunday’s game was the last game of the weekend and the last game of the first half of the season. Jamie Arsenault scored her first-ever hat trick as a Spartan. Lana Peasley earned her first win facing 18 shots and making 16 saves. The girls ended the weekend on a high note winning 6-2 against College Universel.
