The SC basketball team hit the court last Wednesday night for their league home opener against La Poudriere, delivering a confident and commanding performance. Fresh off a successful weekend tournament, the team displayed the fruits of their hard work, particularly in transition play and defensive discipline.
SC started strong, picking up where they left off during the weekend, with an explosive first half marked by forcing turnovers and seamless fast breaks. Both Coach Van Dyke and Coach Blair felt it was the best half of the season in transition, praising the team’s ability to utilize the full width of the court, find open players and execute plays with precision.
One standout feature of SC’s game was their speed. Not only were they quick to capitalize on steals and rebounds but they frequently beat La Poudriere’s defence down the floor—even after a made basket. This combination of speed, confidence and improved court vision was key to their early dominance.
Teamwork in Action SC’s philosophy of developing every player into a two-way threat was evident throughout the game. Jeremy made his presence felt with back-to-back blocks, while Patito sank a crucial three-pointer following three offensive rebounds by his teammates. The team also introduced a new inbounds play, “LINE,” which delivered four easy points.
It is clear SC are really starting to understand the language of basketball. It’s allowing them to make faster adjustments and play smarter, whether in transition or set offenses.
The team’s adaptability shone through when La Poudriere switched from a 2-3 zone to a 1-3-1 defence after the first quarter. Following a quick timeout, SC regrouped, identified the weaknesses in the new defence and continued to dominate.
Game Highlights
Victor and Augie displayed excellent chemistry with sharp hi-lo feeds.
The defence held La Poudriere to just 40 points, with 13 coming from free throws.
Bo relentlessly attacked the basket, while Daniel drained timely three-pointers.
Josh surprised the opposition with well-timed steals, and Jeremiah’s lightning-fast drives ended with skillful left-handed finishes.
Hard Hat Award Winner: Luke This week’s Hard Hat Award went to Luke for his grit and determination. Despite playing fewer minutes, Luke stood out with tough defensive battles, relentless rebounding and crucial plays on both ends of the court. A defining moment came when he took an elbow to the mouth while fighting for an offensive rebound but bounced back immediately, embodying the team’s resilience and toughness.
A Composed and Confident Team Perhaps the most impressive aspect of SC’s performance was their composure. Whether faced with an opponent’s scoring run, mid-game adjustments, or battling through a very tough whistle all game, the team stayed focused, weathered the pressure and continued to execute their game plan with class. Well done, gentlemen!
Final Score: SC 56 – La Poudriere 40
